Who Should Not Have LASIK Surgery?

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Many people get excited when they find out about LASIK vision correction surgery. If you have been complaining about your glasses and contacts for a while, you may feel like you can’t wait to have your vision permanently fixed so that you can see clearly.

There are a few cases where LASIK should not be performed, however. Here are some instances where you should not consider having laser vision correction surgery.

  • Women that are pregnant or nursing should not have LASIK, due to the possible fluctuations in their eyesight because of hormone levels.
  • People that participate in contact sports where they might get blows to the head, such as boxing or martial arts, should avoid LASIK, due to the possibility of complications with the cornea flap.
  • People that have changed their prescription within the last year, or who are taking a medication that can cause vision changes, should not consider LASIK until their eyes have stabilized.
  • People with thin corneas, large pupils, or who have had previous refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK should be carefully evaluated before undergoing LASIK.

To find out if you are a good candidate for the procedure, you will need to have your vision reviewed by Dr. William Boothe at Boothe Laser Center. Once Dr. Boothe has evaluated your eyesight, you can discuss your surgical options with him.

While LASIK is Effective for Most, It Does Come With Risks

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

Many patients look at LASIK as a cure-all for their vision problems. Before you make your appointment for your LASIK procedure, however, it’s important to review a few facts.

For one thing, LASIK is a surgical procedure. Like all surgery, LASIK comes with risks. There is a potential, though small, that your eyesight can be damaged from the LASIK procedure. There is also a chance that your correction won’t be right the first time, and that you will have to have a follow-up procedure to fix it.

Another thing that can happen is that some patients expect too much from the LASIK procedure. During your consultation at Boothe Laser Center, the doctor will discuss how there are no guarantees of results after surgery. It is important to remember that while your vision will probably be significantly better, there are no guarantees that it will be perfect.

All LASIK patients need to remember that they are responsible for their follow-up care and treatment. After surgery, you need to take care of your eyes the way Dr. Boothe instructs you. This will lessen your risk of infection, and will improve your chances of good results.

Your Odds of Clear Vision are Excellent with LASIK

Thursday, December 27th, 2012

Laser eye surgery to correct your blurry vision has been around for many years. The LASIK procedure was approved almost 15 years ago in the U.S. by the FDA. Since then, millions of people have had their vision surgically corrected with LASIK.

One thing you should consider before having any surgical procedure done is to ask if it is safe or not. LASIK is a simple, outpatient procedure, and takes just a few minutes per eye to complete. Many patients will see immediate vision correction, with most being able to pass the eye exam for their driver’s license within a few days. It may take longer – even up to a few weeks – for some people to experience better vision.

In a recent study in the UK, 97% of all patients who underwent LASIK surgery achieved perfect vision correction. In that same study, a total of 99.5% were able to see well enough to pass a driving exam. However, there are no guarantees.

Some people will do better with LASIK than others. The only way to know if you are a good candidate for LASIK is to have a consultation with a qualified surgeon. Make an appointment at Boothe Laser Center today to speak with Dr. William Boothe, and review the procedure. You can discuss the risks with him and determine if LASIK will suit your lifestyle.

What Age Should You Be for LASIK Surgery?

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

LASIK eye surgery is a popular way to permanently correct your vision. If you have complaints about wearing contact lenses or glasses, you may want to consider LASIK.

How old do you need to be to have LASIK surgery? As a general rule, patients need to be at least 18 years old before they can be approved for LASIK. They must also have a stable vision, with a prescription that hasn’t changed for a year or two. For some people, this will mean waiting until they are in their 20s or 30s.

On the upper end of the age spectrum, it all depends on the health of their eyes. If a patient has healthy eyes and a stable prescription, they can expect good results from LASIK into their 60s. However, if they have eye issues, such as diabetes, patients in their 50s may not get good results from the surgery.

That’s why anyone considering LASIK eye surgery needs to have a consultation before their procedure. When they come to Boothe Laser Center and see Dr. William Boothe, he will review their vision and their health history, and make a recommendation as to whether or not LASIK will work for them.

Your Night Vision After LASIK

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

Does LASIK eye surgery affect your night vision? Many patients find that they have complaints of diminished night vision after undergoing laser eye surgery. It’s not unusual to see glare, halos, and starbursts at night after having surgery on your eyes.

These effects in your night vision are generally caused by the swelling of your cornea. It will go away as your eye heals. This can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks or even months. Some patients find that they have difficulty driving at night for several days or several weeks after surgery.

If you continue to have issues with your night vision after your LASIK surgery, you should let your surgeon know. Continued night vision problems after you heal could be related to problems with your corneal flap, or your vision being over or undercorrected.

Though the risks are small, it’s important to review this and other possible complications before deciding on LASIK eye surgery. Any questions that you have can be answered by Dr. Boothe during your consultation at Boothe Laser Center.

What to Look for When Choosing a Doctor for Laser Eye Surgery

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

If you’ve made the decision to have laser eye surgery, the first thing you want to do is find a competent doctor and surgeon to perform the operation. You want to choose someone who you know is reliable and capable of handling such a delicate part of your body. If you’re searching through websites, try looking at the doctor’s licensing information. You can do this either on their website if they have the information, or by sending them an email. The main surgeon performing the operation generally has a bio on their home website. Dr. William Boothe has an extensive profile and list of achievements, licenses, and degrees on the Boothe Eye Care Center webpage. Their website also includes Dr. Boothe’s history with the procedure, as well as testimonials from patients.

This information is usually the most helpful when trying to decide where to have your laser eye surgery done, but there are other factors that can help you choose the most qualified doctor as well. One way is through referrals from other patients or doctors. You can look up reviews about the doctors and the clinics they work for on their website, or by performing a general Internet search of the clinic name. The Boothe Laser Center has testimonies from well-known people who have received laser eye surgery from Dr. Boothe, including actors, PGA golf players and hall of fame football stars.

What is Wavefront Mapping?

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

Wavefront mapping is a technique used during IntraLASIK to customize eye surgery for each individual patient. The traditional LASIK procedure, glasses, and contacts can correct relatively minor vision issues, but since the correction isn’t as customized as Wavefront mapping, they can still leave the patient with vision that isn’t entirely 20/20. Dr. Boothe uses Wavefront mapping for patients who receive IntraLASIK. This is because the IntraLASIK technology is the only laser eye surgery that is able to use Wavefront mapping to create an entirely custom-made surgery for patients. Generally, this technology is used for people with more severe vision issues than just astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness.

The benefits of using Wavefront mapping and IntraLASIK is that people with severe vision problems have an increased chance of achieving 20/20 vision after the surgery, and more than 95% of patients who receive the customized laser correction are able to see 20/20 or better. The Boothe Laser Center uses the latest FDA approved excimer lasers that are capable of using Wavefront mapping for customized treatment.  Though the procedures are more expensive, they are the best hope for people with severe vision issues to regain perfect sight without the use of glasses or contacts.

Studies Show Nearsightedness is Developing at a Younger Age

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Nearsightedness, or myopia, occurs when the eye is unable to focus clearly on things at a distance. It is not known exactly what causes some people to become nearsighted. However, more people are being diagnosed as nearsighted at a younger age than ever before. It is suspected that this may have something to do with spending more time looking at electronic devices up close, like phones and computers. But no one knows for sure.

Myopia in children and teenagers can lead to headaches and complaints of not being able to see in school. It can be treated with glasses and contact lenses, but these both have their own problems, such as being easily broken or lost.

Fortunately for myopia sufferers, once you turn 18 there is another option. LASIK surgery can permanently correct vision in those with up to -12 diopters of nearsightedness. As long as you have healthy eyes and have had no vision changes for the past year, you may be a candidate for LASIK eye surgery. To find out, contact Boothe Laser Center and schedule a consultation with Dr. Boothe. After reviewing your options, you can decide if LASIK is right for you.
